Virulence factors involved in the pathogenesis of bovine intramammary infections due to Staphylococcus aureus.

Staphylococcus aureus is a major causative agent of intramammary infections in dairy cows. In this report, the pathogenesis of these infections is described. The potential role in virulence of S. aureus surface components (adhesins, protein A and capsular polysaccharides), toxins, extracellular enzymes and coagulase, and perspectives for the development of an efficient vaccine are discussed.

Molecular types and genetic profiles of Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from bovine intramammary infections and extramammary sites.

Staphylococcus aureus isolates collected from sites of intramammary infection during a 10-month period and from extramammary sites (dairy cow teat skin, teat canals, and skin lesions; milking liners; and hands and nostrils of milking personnel) at two separately managed Finnish dairy herd establishments were analyzed to study the sources and reservoirs of bovine S. aureus intramammary infection...

Genotypic and phenotypic detection of capsular polysaccharides in Staphylococcus aureus isolated from bovine intramammary infections in Argentina

Staphylococcus aureus (n=157) isolated from intramammary infections in Argentine dairy areas were evaluated for presence of cap5 and cap8 loci. Isolates carrying cap5 and cap8 were serotyped using specific antisera. Sixty four percent of the isolates were genotyped as cap5 or cap8 and 50% of them expressed CP5 or 8.

Bacterial genotype affects the manifestation and persistence of bovine Staphylococcus aureus intramammary infection.

Two-hundred seventeen Staphylococcus aureus isolates from 116 dairy cows with intramammary infections were analyzed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis to study the association between symptom severity, persistence of infection, and bacterial genotype. Among five main genotypes infecting 90% of the cows, one was associated with severe clinical symptoms but reduced persistence.

Association between teat skin colonization and intramammary infections with Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus agalactiae

Introduction and Objective Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus agalactiae are traditionally considered contagious mastitis pathogens mainly causing subclinical infections in dairy cattle. The consequences of subclinical mastitis are economic losses to the farmer and impaired milk quality. To improve the control of contagious mastitis pathogens, knowledge of reservoirs and transmission is cr...
